Messiah Lutheran Boys Win State Basketball Championship
The feeling has become familiar for the boys basketball team at Messiah Lutheran School in Fairview Park, Ohio. For the third time in the past five years, the boys are state champions.

The team clinched the state title on March 5 at the Lutheran Schools of Ohio All Ohio Basketball Tournament held at Lutheran West High School in Rocky River, Ohio.
The team advances to the Lutheran Basketball Association of America’s National Tournament of Champions in Valparaiso, Indiana later this month.

Led by Head Coach Brian Polenz, the Messiah Blazers finished their season 19-2 and won the regular season and mid-season tournaments. Polenz, a 1995 graduate of Messiah Lutheran School, has been coaching the Blazers for nine years and has coached them to three state championships.

His Assistant Coach, Lanny Thieme, has been involved in the basketball program at Messiah since 1975 – serving as head coach for many of those years – and has been part of all eight of the school’s state basketball championships.

“We’ve got a great group of guys this year,” Polenz says. “They played very strong as a team, very strong defensively. And there was consistent scoring offensively.” Eighth graders Bryce Neumann, Reilly Kinter and Trey DeCicco were named to the all-tournament team, and led the Blazers in scoring this season.

“Three of our current players have older brothers who played for Messiah and were part of championship teams, so I think they had that added motivation,” Polenz says. “We’re all excited to play at Nationals and we feel the support from the church and school communities.”
